Recruiting Top Candidates: Writing a Job Ad

In our previous post, we explored some of the ways in which you can recruit and hire qualified candidates for your business. In such a competitive market, it requires some planning and finesse to attract the best applicants to your company. With that in mind, we’re going to take a closer look at how to effectively write job descriptions to establish expectations from the start. Before reading on, protect your business with a comprehensive Delaware EPLI program.

Job title.

This simple yet obvious step can be misconstrued in a lot of ways. According to RecruitLoop, an effective job title will possess the following:

  • It accurately reflects the nature of the job and the duties being performed.
  • It reflects its ranking order with other jobs in the company.
  • It does not exaggerate the importance of the role.
  • It is free of gender or age implications.
  • It is generic enough that it can be compared to similar jobs in the industry for the purposes of equity in pay and conditions.

Lastly, ensure the job title is generic enough that anyone who searches won’t be confused by it. You want the title to be easily viewed by recruiters and job seekers.

Job duties.

List accurate descriptions of what their duties will include. Note the percentage of work that will be completed in house, while traveling, remotely, and other relevant information. Keep the descriptions short so that it doesn’t start to read like an operation manual: two sentences at the max.

Salary.

Include a relevant range of pay that accommodates experience and education. This figure should be reflective of the changing pay scales and aligned with other industry pay structures.

Skills and competencies.

Skills and competencies should be listed separately from each other, as they are two quite separate things. Skills are activities the candidate can perform based on what they have learned in the past, or from qualifications they have obtained. Competencies are the traits or attributes you expect the candidate to display in the role.
